There are 14 Pilgrimage Ways and historical paths crossing Emilia Romagna, stretching over 2,000 kilometers and connecting the region to Rome and the rest of Europe.
The Way of Dante (Il Cammino di Dante) is a route that retraces the ancient roads and medieval paths connecting Romagna and Tuscany, specifically Ravenna and Florence. These are the lands where the Poet lived in political exile and where he completed the Divine Comedy.
Length: 395 km (Ravenna – Florence – Ravenna)
Bagnacavallo also honors Dante Alighieri with a plaque on the facade of Palazzo Vecchio, in the central Piazza della Libertà, featuring a sarcastic comment taken from the Divine Comedy.
“Well does Bagnacaval, that gets no more sons; and ill does Castrocaro, and Conio worse, that yet to get such counts takes further pains.” (Purg. Canto XIV)
The plaque, bearing this Dantesque tercet, was installed by the People's University of Bagnacavallo (born from the Mutual Aid Society) on the 6th centenary of Dante Alighieri's death. The Poet died of malaria in Ravenna on the night between September 13th and 14th, 1321.
The Supreme Poet “praises” Bagnacavallo for the extinction of its most prominent family, the Malvicini Counts, who in the year 1300 had only three female descendants. According to Dante, it was better for the lineage to die out than to continue producing a morally decayed nobility like that of Castrocaro or Conio (a castle near Imola).
Our hotel also pays tribute to the Supreme Poet with the Candida Rosa room: a celestial amphitheater where Saint Francis is present, echoing the theme of rose gardens and the numerous secret gardens of the town and the surrounding territory.
