The revolutionary French troops led by Napoleon Bonaparte invade Italy, imposing a new anti-Christian social order. In 1796 Pope Pius VI, sick and elderly, was arrested and deported to France, where he died of starvation. The churches are desecrated, the sacred furnishings looted and the monasteries suppressed.
